David beats Goliath!
On Tuesday 2 August, I had the pleasure on behalf of Football Federation Australia to be the master of ceremony for a round of 32 Football Federation of Australia (FFA) Cup match between Victorian State Club Green Gully, based in the north western Melbourne Suburb of Keilor, up against A-League outfit the Central Coast Mariners from Gosford in New South Wales.
Few pundits gave Green Gully any chance of defeating a much stronger and professional opposition, considering that only one state league team had previously defeated an A-League opponent in the competition’s history.
Well, Green Gully etched their name into Australian football folklore, coming from behind to defeat the Central Coast Mariners 2:1, scoring two goals in the last ten minutes. The winning goal from Green Gully’s striker Liam Boland from near the half way line was a goal worthy of winning a match at any level of football worldwide. The goal oozed talent and class and was a pleasure to announce over the stadium microphone details of the winning goal.
